Te Mata Peak is a top tourist destination in New Zealand and is on the western boundary of Heretaunga plains. Once you reach the summit, enjoy fantastic views of Ruahine, Cape Kidnappers and Maungaharuru Ranges. Hikers enjoy nature trails on this peak; it is difficult reaching the spot however it is worth the effort.
Choose a walking track…
Choose one among the many walking tracks to explore the park that is rich in history, both geological and human. However there are 5 tracks that are mostly taken via car park near the Main gates or Tauroa road car park. Each track is a different loop and you can travel in either direction.
There are some signs with QR (Quick Reference) codes you need to lookout for that can be scanned through your smartphone to get access to information on these sites.
Take care!
You have to take care while walking on the tracks, some areas are steep. Especially if you are walking during/ after a wet weather, you have to be extra cautious. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. There are no toilets, a point to be noted. Drinking water facility is also not available.
Park Maintenance
The park is very well maintained. You need to dispose all rubbish in the bins placed at the car park near the main gates and the summit. Bikes are allowed only on some sections of the track that are marked with ‘Shared track’ orange stickers. The trust will be grateful if you can collect trash found in the park.
Now you know where the Te Mata Peak Park is and how to reach, get started to hike all the way! You will have an experience you never had before.
This is the most exciting place in New Zealand and Hastings, Hawke’s Bay area especially!
